This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response in an education and care setting. It applies to educators and support staff in schools and early childhood settings who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies.
Course entry
- Minimum age requirement: 18 years
- Participants must be able to perform CPR on the floor using a manikin
- Literacy and numeracy skills sufficient to complete the course
- Completion of LLN assessment before enrolment
- Refresher courses require a valid first aid certificate
Outcome
Upon successful completion of the HLTAID012 course, participants will be able to:
- Respond to emergency situations in an education and care setting
- Apply first aid procedures, including CPR and using an AED
- Manage asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies
- Administer first aid for injuries such as burns, bleeding, fractures, and choking
- Provide a safe and supportive environment for a casualty
A nationally recognized Statement of Attainment will be issued.
Delivery
Workplace Training
Not applicable for this course. The training takes place in a simulated environment that mimics a workplace or childcare setting.
Distance Training
Distance training is not available for this course as it requires practical, hands-on experience that must be assessed in person.
Online Training
Online learning for theory components is available. Pre-reading materials and assessments can be accessed via our online portal before attending the face-to-face sessions.
Virtual Classroom
This course requires in-person training for practical skills; a virtual classroom is not available.
Practical Placement
Not applicable. All practical assessments and demonstrations are conducted in the training environment using manikins and first aid equipment.
