In this training, you will develop the skills to support people living with dementia, using a person-centred approach that respects their dignity, enhances their quality of life, and supports their independence.

Competency Field

Upon completion, participants will be able to support people living with dementia by following individualised plans, communicating effectively, and using strategies to manage behavioural changes, while upholding the person’s dignity and rights.

Foundation Skills

  • Reading: Interpret individualised care plans, dementia-related documentation, and organisational policies.
  • Writing: Document observations and changes in behaviour, completing reports in line with organisational procedures.
  • Oral Communication: Engage with people living with dementia, their families, and carers using verbal and non-verbal communication strategies.
  • Problem Solving: Identify triggers for behavioural changes and implement strategies to reduce stressors and meet the person’s needs.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate with families, carers, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive care for the person living with dementia.
  • Self-management: Reflect on personal care practices and maintain awareness of the impact of dementia on individuals and their families.
